Waste Tanks

Waste holding tanks make up about 50% of our business hence there are not many shapes or sizes we have not supplied. Our knowledge of marine holding tank systems is second to none. Holding tank layouts are available on our website and cover probably every variation there is.

We can either build a custom tank to suit the intricate shape of your boat or vehicle, or supply a standard off the shelf unit from a comprehensive stock range.

SBS 2009 01

Tek-Tanks would like to thank all the visitors who came on to the stand at this years Southampton Boatshow. Yet again the main subject of conversation was the wish to fit holding tanks before renting out your houses and sailing off into the blue yonder!

We were very busy at times and would like to thank you for your patience while waiting for someone to become available.

SBS 2009 02The tank building display seemed well received with lots of questions being asked. Quite a few visitors were unaware that we could actually custom build tanks to their size and shape which came as quite a surprise to us!

We will almost certainly be doing the same next year, so if your tank is in our schedule around boatshow time, you may actually see it being made.

The new level indication display seemed to work better being longer, as more people were able to use it at once. This display is a permanent feature in our office along with the new holding tank plumbing display, so please do come along and have another look if you want to see the gauges working.

Smelly Heads?

Smelly Heads?

Have you ever noticed that musty sulphurous smell when you enter your boat after leaving it for a week or two? If you have it is more than likely coming from the toilet. The water left in the inlet pipe and toilet bowl contain micro-organisms and when they die they give off this smell. The cure for this particular problem is to introduce fresh water into the inlet line before leaving the boat. This can be done by fitting a small tank containing fresh water that is teed into the inlet line with a ¾” two way valve. Tek-Tanks can supply this equipment either as a kit or we can supply the parts individually.

Other odour problems can be put down to sanitation hose that has come to the end of its useful life. Normally good quality sanitation hose will last between 2 and five years. If pipe runs do not have a natural fall then waste can collect in sagging areas and then over time odours will permeate the hose causing smells. A simple method of testing whether your pipe has had it or not, is to take a damp cloth and wipe the surface of the hose and then smell it. If the cloth smells at all then your sanitation hose will need replacing. It is important to fit a good quality hose and expect to pay at least £10.00 per metre, anything cheaper than this will probably be an inferior spa hose that really is not up to the job. Good sanitation hose has a certain amount of nitrile compound to combat any odours.

Another source of smell can be the tank itself. Thin walled tanks (3-5mm) that are sold as waste tanks are really not up to the job. Waste odour can permeate through the tank wall over time and cause the boat to smell. Tek-Tanks waste holding tanks are all manufactured with at least a 10mm wall thickness.

Fuel Tanks

Fuel Tanks

Tek Tanks custom fuel tanks are manufactured from 10mm thick high density polyethylene and are suitable for diesel fuel only. For petrol applications we can supply tanks from a standard blow moulded range with capacities from 140 litres.

Custom tanks come with brass fittings for the filler, vent, feed and return. Fittings are screwed into female BSP threads welded to the tank. A comprehensive fittings list is available for downloading as well as our Fuel Tank Design Guide.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

We are often asked either “What is the advantage of plastic compared with stainless steel or aluminium” so below we have decided to sum up the points we feel are valid to help you decide.

Tek Tanks vs Aluminium

Heavily corroded waste tank

1. Tek Tanks will not corrode when used for waste, Aluminium will. Aluminium tanks could show signs of corrosion within a few years.

2. Aluminium tanks should not used be used for water because there is a possible link to Alzheimer’s disease when used for drinking water tanks.

3. Aluminium tanks have been know to crack at the welds when used in high performance applications.

4. Aluminium tanks need to be painted in a marine environment to combat corrosion, painting adds to the cost and has to be checked and repainted when necessary. Tek Tanks need no further treatment.

5. Aluminium tanks needs to be earthed to the boat’s electrical system. Tek Tanks do not need earthing.

6. Contents are visible with a Tek Tank, Aluminium tanks need a sender.

7. All Tek Tanks fuel tanks are CE marked for added peace of mind.

8. All Tek Tanks fuel tanks will almost eliminate condensation within the tank. Metal tanks have to be kept filled when not in use to reduce condensation. Water in the fuel can cause engine problems.

Tek Tanks vs Stainless Steel

1. Tek Tanks will not corrode when used for waste, stainless steel will. Stainless steel  could show signs of corrosion  within only a few years.

Stainless Corrosion Small

2. Stainless steel tanks are generally heavier than a Tek-Tanks custom built tank if built from a reasonable thickness of material.

3. Stainless steel tanks are quite often more expensive than Tek Tanks if built by a reputable company.

4. Stainless steel tanks need to be earthed  to the boat’s electrical system. Tek Tanks do not need earthing.

5. Contents are visible with a Tek Tank: Stainless steel tanks need a sender.

6. Stainless steel tanks have been known to crack at the welds when used in high performance applications.Tek Tanks have manufactured tanks for performance craft with no failures to date, boats include Sunseeker P1 race boat, several Round Britain boats and the famous blade runner.

7. A Tek Tanks fuel tank will almost eliminate condensation within a fuel tank. Metal tanks have to be kept filled when not in use to reduce condensation. Water in the fuel can cause engine problems.

8. All Tek Tanks fuel tanks are CE marked for added peace of mind.

Tek Tanks vs Flexible Bag tanks

1. Flexible bag tanks have been known to fail at the fittings due to excessive movement of the tank. When half full the contents will move  violently in a heavy sea as there are no baffles.

Corroded Flexible tank

Worn out flexible tank

2. Flexible tanks can be askward to install …they should have slats between the tank and hull so as the hull can breath and also avoid chafing of the bag on the hull.

3. Flexible tanks when used for waste have a reputation of smelling badly. With no vent the contents turn sceptic. Tek Tanks are completely odour free when used for waste due to the 10mm thick walls.

Corroded Flexible tank

Main Advantages of Tek Tanks

1. Corrosion free. Will not rust or corrode and are not subject to electrolysis problems.

2. Contents can be seen through the tank under most conditions.

3. When used in a fresh water application Tek Tanks water tanks are absolutely taste free. The material used is a food grade polyethylene which has FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval. We can support this fact with documentation from Rochling the material suppliers.

4. No smells when used as a waste holding tanks.10 mm thick combat any odour problems. To eradicate smells throughout the whole system, a large breather has to be used, minimum 1″ in diameter, preferably 1  1/2″ in diameter.

5. Lighter in weight than most Stainless steel tanks which is ideal for racing boat applications.

6. All Tek Tanks custom built tanks come with a 5 year guarantee.

7. All Tek Tanks waste tanks comply with the latest ISO standards within the marine industry and can be fitted to boats being built under the RCD (Recreational Craft Directive.) This includes almost every new boat being built in Europe.

8. All Tek Tanks fuel tanks are CE marked and comply with the latest ISO standards within the marine industry.

Outside help for the Tek-Tanks Team

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

The Tek-Tanks team all firmly believe we make the best plastic tanks….and we do. Knowing this we can sell with confidence and help you choose the right tank for your application.

Regular business coaching by Alex Petty has brought the team on leaps and bounds. Do visit his website for more information.

Funding from Train to Gain allowed us to get Roger Dyer from MAS South East (Manufacturing Advisory Service) to come in and do a complete process mapping exercise in the office and workshop. We mapped out our movements from picking up the phone from the first contact with the customer to shipping the tank and found we had travelled a total distance of 1450 metres! A bit of office equipment shuffling and some pretty major changes in the workshop reduced this to 840 metres for an average tank. This saving in time and movement will enable us the build at least 60 more tanks per year.

David Hudec from Practical Partners has been a huge help with all our operational systems development. By linking our accounts package to some very clever spreadsheets we can now tell exactly what stage each tank is at.

Level Indicators

Tank Level Indication

Tank level indication is acheived in many ways, whether it be electrical or mechanical. A sender mounted in the tank sends a signal to a gauge and can either be 12 or 24 volts. A mechancial unit is read directly from the tank top.

Tek-Tanks can also supply a range of non-invasive units which “read” the level through the tank wall and can be fitted to stainless steel, mild steel and aluminium tanks as well as our own fabricated custom built tanks.

Level through the tank wall and can be fitted to stainless steel, mild steel and aluminium tanks as well as our own fabricated custom built tanks.

Level indication can be supplied for water, waste and fuel tanks. Switching units to control pumps can also be supplied for grey water handling and fuel transfer systems…..please give us a call to discuss your requirements or ideas….we love a challenge!
